Recent Board Update Regarding Church Closure
Hello Unitarian Universalist Members and Friends
,
As you are aware, Florida Governor DeSantis issued an executive “Stay at Home” order last week in response to the growing Coronavirus threat. The order instructs all people residing in Florida to “limit their movements and personal interactions outside of their home to only those necessary to obtain or provide essential services or conduct essential activities.”
Governor DeSantis has included “attending religious services conducted in churches, synagogues and house of worship” as an “essential activity.” UUCS leadership strongly disagrees with this policy and will not be reopening on campus services.
The UUCS Emergency Committee affirms that until otherwise notified, all Church activities on the campus of the Unitarian Universalist Church of Sarasota are restricted. This includes the meeting of any support groups previously renting space.
UUCS staff members, Rev Beth Miller, Rev Budd Friend-Jones, Roberta Druif (Director of Finance and Operations), Dee Widder (Administrative Assistant), and Catherine Bonner (Director of Religious Education), will be working from home. Arrangements are being made for periodic surveillance of the campus. As “working outdoors” at a safe distance from others appears to be an allowed activity, members of the garden crew can work on the grounds for their personal mental and physical health at their sole discretion.
If you have questions about this policy update, please contact Roberta Druif at directoruucs@gmail.com or Dee Widder at aauucs@gmail.com .
Dale Anderson
Emergency Committee:
The Board has empowered an ad hoc committee consisting of Reverend Beth Miller (Associate Minister), Dale Anderson (President), Karen Bush (Vice President), Roberta Druif (Director of Finance and Operations), and Klaus Obermeit (Media Coordinator) to provide day-to-day management of the church during the shutdown. This group is meeting weekly to address any operational or other issues needing an official decision. This committee has been empowered to act until the May Board of Trustees meeting at which time its function will be reviewed.

The Unitarian Universalist Church of Sarasota is financed and governed locally. The Board of Trustees is the governing body of the church and, in that capacity, sets basic policy matters on behalf of the congregation. While committee chairs are responsible for the day-to-day operations of the church, the Board is responsible for establishing an organizational structure and delegating the authority to carry out the activities of the church. The Board also works closely with the Finance Committee to ensure fiscal integrity.
The Board of Trustees is elected by the congregation at its annual meeting at the end of our fiscal year. There are 10 elected trustees. Board officers are elected to one year terms; other Board members are elected to staggered terms to ensure that there is sufficient continuity on the Board. The four officers of the church are: President, Vice-President, Secretary, and Treasurer. The Minister of the church is an ex-officio member of the Board. The Officers, Minister and Director of Finance & Operations make up the Executive Committee.
The Board meets promptly at 7:00 PM on the third Tuesday of each month. Meetings are open to all interested members of the congregation.
