Embracing Diversity

Celebration of
Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

January 15, 2018
7:00pm
Booker High School
3201 N. Orange Ave.

Presented by Westcoast Black Theatre

$10 reserved seating, $35 Premium Seating

This year is the 50th anniversary of Dr. King’s assassination, and as we look to be allies in the Black Lives Matter movement and the continued struggle for civil rights for all our diverse people, celebrating this hero will inspire us.

Faces of Change
February 16, 2018
7:00 to 8:30pm.
UUCS Sanctuary
Presented by the Asolo Rep Theatre, Visible Men Academy, Manatee School for the Arts, UnidosNow, Booker Middle School, and others

Faces of Change is Asolo Rep’s annual community-based theatre project. This is a revival presentation of the one created in 2017 that was inspired by themes of civil rights and racism. This project was created from real-life experiences of local residents and community members. Each conversation was recorded and transcribed, and then carefully arranged into the script presented here. The stories are a way to explore racism in our community and explore ways to build connections for greater understanding.
We Are Sarasota

This is perhaps our most challenging principle. Every person. Think about those with whom you may have major philosophical or political disagreements. Every person. How do we meet this challenge? One way is to encounter and explore diversity - race, ethnicity, sexuality, religion, age, capability, economics, politics.

The Social Justice Committee has chosen to broaden the conversation to examine multiple facets of diversity. Our organizer for this series, Dr. Jody McBrien, has taught these issues for 15 years at Emory University and the University of South Florida, Sarasota-Manatee campus. We invite you to join with us to explore the following topics.

Detailed course description, recommended readings and videos for each session

1. Feb 5           An Introduction to Diversity & Safe Discourse – Dr. Jody McBrien
2. Feb 12         Generational Diversity and Age – Dr. Kathy Black
3. Feb 19         Race/Ethnicity – Speaker - Janet Morgan
4. Feb 26         Religion – Panel of Christian, Jewish, Buddhist, & Muslim speakers
5. March 5       Immigration and Refugees – Dr. Jody McBrien & Ivis Triana
