October 23:
The Call to Courage

Sermon by Ed Loomis
We celebrate the courage of  Mohandas Gandhi and Susan B. Anthony. Heroic people that stand tall. We rightfully honor such giants. But most of us aren’t that tall. Or are we?

Ed Loomis was born and raised in Michigan and remained there for the first 53 years of his life. After 30 years he retired from his career as a senior analyst in the Department of State. He then earned a Master of Divinity (M.Div.) from the Meadville Lombard Theological School and served as the summer minister of the UU Church of Rockford, IL. He remained in the Hyde Park section of Chicago for the next 13 years and was a member of the First Unitarian Society of Chicago. He moved to Sarasota in 2015. We give him a warm welcome him to our Lakewood Ranch UU community!

Elaine Silver
We welcome back Elaine Silver, who has contributed much to our services recently and in the past. Elaine is the recipient of a Garden State Music Award for Outstanding Folk Performer, nationally featured on The Wisdom Channel and on New Jersey Network's award-winning television program State of the Arts, and has appeared in concert with Arlo Guthrie, Pete Seeger, Doc Watson, Tom Paxton, Suzanne Vega, Jorma Kaukonen, Tom Chapin and many more of the folk world's brightest stars.
October 16:
Conscience versus Compromise
Sermon by Rev. Jay Wolin
Please welcome our new settled minister of the Unitarian Universalist Church of Sarasota: Rev. Jay Wolin. He will be joining us at the Lakewood Ranch campus! He will be exploring civil religion as a vision for American politics.  With a seeming loss of civil discourse in society, how does that impact our engagement in public life? How do our religious values impact our involvement in politics?

Music by Carmela Pedicini and Passerine!
.
Passerine’s distinctive sound combines vocal harmonies, the crisp rhythms of an acoustic guitar, the haunting voices of the fiddle and dobro (resonator slide guitar), the resonant lows of an acoustic bass. With inventive vocal harmonies and song-writing, supported by the sounds of acoustic strings, Passerine offers a fresh take on traditional folk and bluegrass music as well as a repertoire of original songs that range from sweet ballads to the edgier side of contemporary Americana.

October 9:
Will Our Divisive Culture Ever Heal?

Sermon by John Brackett
It seems our democracy is going backwards, not just here but in democracies everywhere. As tiresome as it  feels, will there ever be a way out?  It may be helpful to take a big step back and see where the deeper issues lie.

October 2:
Seasonal Ingathering / Welcome Back!
Please bring a small vial of water that you have collected over the summer, and be prepared to share a brief description of where it came from. “Virtual” water will be provided for anyone who has not collected!
