*10:45 SUNDAY JUNE 26 SERVICE
This Sunday service at 10:45 in person in the Sanctuary and on YouTube accessible via https://www.uucsarasota.com/.
Service by Endera Stevens, Yolanda Stevens and Mary Lou Keller
Yolanda, Endera and Mary Lou will celebrate the beautiful things that make our hearts sing with a unique guided meditation, an enthusiastic interpretation of the children’s book Something Beautiful, inspiring music and stories. Bring something you consider beautiful to share on a table in the sanctuary, and if time allows, we will hear people’s stories during or after the service. This is an intergenerational service and will be an experience not to be missed.
The Service includes a ten-minute Sound Bath produced using crystal bowls made from crushed quartz crystals. If you have a heart pacemaker, coronary stent, cardiac shunt, artificial heart valves or implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD), it may be better for you to sit out this part of the service in the courtyard. We regret any inconvenience.
Yolanda is new to the freedom of being a Unitarian Universalist and loves so much about our community, and how we are active in uplifting and empowering others, that she calls herself an “Enthusiastic UU”. Our living the Seven Principles and potentially an Eighth Principle fulfills and lifts her in ways that gives her space to hope for a better world.
Endera is co-owner of the Northend Agent's, the oldest and largest African American newspaper in Connecticut formerly published by her mother, Yolanda. She also has a spiritual business called The Gem & Eye where she does tarot readings, reiki, and sound healing. Her passions include art, community, family, and nature.
Mary Lou is a long-term UU and serves on the Worship and Religious Education committees as well as being Vice-President of our Board of Trustees. She shares Yolanda and Endera’s enthusiasm for our diverse UU faith and the potential for manifesting even more beauty in the world.
MUSIC: Don Bryn, Piano; Robert Lischetti, Vocalist
Restrictions on the number of attendees has been lifted. However, we still require that masks be worn in the Sanctuary. Thank you.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE - Bill Payton, Board of Trustees
This Sunday is Rev. Douglas Wadkins (Doug) last Sunday in the pulpit. He is moving on to a new chapter in his life, in his journey, in his ministry. I am happy for him, but I am sorry to see him go.
We will be honoring Doug with a reception immediately following the service. And as we gather to wish him well, and while you are enjoying the refreshments, please think about this: Rev. Wadkins arrived in the midst of the pandemic, masked and ready to go. It must have been a lonely and daunting experience, getting to know us in only a virtual world, but Doug did what he had to do… He just “started.” He became our spiritual leader, but he also immediately set out his program to lead us though a transition.
From my perspective, as a member of the Board, he made us question ourselves, how we did business, and how we made decisions. And while it was at times, uncomfortable, he knew it was the right thing to do, and we knew it was the right thing to do. His work prepared us for the next chapter, the ministry of Rev. Jay Wolin. Thank you. Doug.
Each of you will have your own memories of Rev. Wadkins. Take a moment and write a note and leave it at the reception. I know he will appreciate it.

In the Interim by Rev. Douglas Wadkins
“Soul Matters” Themes
As we close out another cycle of themes, I want to remind you why I explore themes in the congregations I serve during the interim period. I think themes are important for many reasons. Over the last 20 years of my experience with themes, I have experienced a few things that recommend the thoughtful use of themes in every setting. Soul Matters is the theme program that we have used, but there are other sets of theme materials UUs curate all for our congregations. These programs offer resources that benefit the congregation's major programs, including worship resources, Religious Education resources and curricula, social justice materials, Chalice Circles, and other small group packets. These materials help the entirety of the congregation feel more cohesive and united in their focus, often fostering better connections between generations within the congregation. These theme sources offer selections curated thoughtfully and take in materials far and wide from our movement and beyond. Thematic materials result in richer and broader content than any solitary person, no matter how resourceful. The materials incorporate various perspectives and integrate spirituality and justice work. The use of themes in the congregation moves its exploration more meaningfully and deeply into life's complex and essential components. In addition, it invites the exploration of many more facets because it carries the theme through the entire month and offers various aspects of the theme for the congregation’s consideration. Themes foster deeper connections with our larger movement by encouraging congregations all over the US and beyond to have a similar focus throughout the month. When we may feel isolated, themes practice interconnection and partnership with our larger movement.
The small group resources offer a particular approach to that work, but the resource packet is useable in various ways. It gives an overview of the theme, and a broad set of resources from quotes to music and film to explore. It offers questions and spiritual exercises to help one deepen into the theme. Our Journey Circles use the approach suggested by the materials, but other groups use the materials as a resource. It is also possible to benefit any congregant by using it to expand the engagement of the topic. It is possible to arrange for any congregant to get these resources. Here is this month’s topic material to offer an example. I invite you to click and download the pdf and experiment with the resources this month. Click Here For The Soul Matters Packet.

10:45 SUNDAY JUNE 5 SERVICE
This Sunday service at 10:45 in person in the Sanctuary and on YouTube accessible via https://www.uucsarasota.com/.
Sermon by The Rev. Doug Wadkins
As we begin our final theme until the fall, we think about the importance of honoring our shared life. An essential part of this life is acknowledging the crucial facets of our lives, both individual and shared. We have established various rites that help us honor them. This practice is an excellent thing. This service will explore why this is important and how to get the most out of these moments. In light of the month’s theme, we will also examine why the perspective of blessings has particular resonance for each of us!
MUSIC: Don Bryn, Piano; Zach Johnson, Guest Musician, Guitar
Dr. Zachary Johnson is a classical guitarist whose talent has garnered national attention. He has performed in venues across the United States for recitals, competitions, and festivals. He has performed for the Portland Classic Guitar Series, Seven Hills Concert Series, Guitar Sarasota, and as a selected performer for the Stetson International Guitar Festival. In the Interim by Rev. Doug Wadkins
“Hellos and Goodbyes”
Hello good people,
The most consistent message of transitional ministry is that ALL work in a congregation is transition work because change is always with us. The change is the part that is a given, but what we do with and in the midst of change is the crucial work. In the particular time we find ourselves, we are in the midst of many vital Hellos and Goodbyes.
You recently said your first hellos to your soon-to-be new minister, The Rev. Jay Wolin, a brief and wonderful beginning. As a congregation and as individuals, you will be working on the preparations for a hello with Rev. Jay that establishes potential patterns for years to come. Currently, Rev. Jay is in the process of saying goodbye to the congregation he has served for about 11 years. This goodbye is important and heartfelt work that involves addressing forms of grief brought about by such changes. However, doing the healing and closure-oriented work of goodbye will open the door to a more meaningful hello for the future leadership of that congregation in Iowa.
This is a time of transition for me and you all as well. While we still have much work in the days ahead, we are beginning the process of saying goodbye to each other. It is a goodbye powerfully impacted by the unusual hello during the pandemic. I am so grateful for the many weeks more recently that we have been able to have more direct interactions. While the first year plus was unusual, it was also a vital and meaningful ministry for me. It was challenging, yes, but much needed, and had moments of profound fulfillment. I have had many meaningful interactions in my two years here, and it is important to acknowledge it all as I get ready to say goodbye.
I will also be in the process of my hello to the congregation I will be serving next. I will be going to the Eliot Unitarian Chapel in the greater St. Louis area. However, my immediate attention is with you here at UUCS. Doing an excellent job with you and helping you prepare for a dynamic new ministry will help you move forward to a deeper hello with Rev. Jay.
So, there is good work ahead in the coming month!
Warmly,
Doug

“Bridging the Divide for Democracy’s Sake” by Rev. Brock Leach
For a nation of indigenous, immigrant and formerly enslaved people like ours, democracy cannot survive on any claim of cultural superiority. It can only flourish when we center on our shared longings for life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness and work together to fulfill them. This means finding value in cultural diversity of all kinds, but it also means being in deep enough relationship with people from very different cultures to be able to see past differences and claim our common human values. How might we bridge that divide?
Rev. Brock Leach is a Unitarian Universalist social justice and community minister. Most recently, Brock was vice-president of mission, strategy and innovation for the Unitarian Universalist Service Committee (UUSC) where he helped create and launch the UU College of Social Justice; Commit2Respond, a UU-wide campaign for Climate Justice; and UUSC Justice-Building, a new program to support congregations and activists in leading more effective justice work. He also developed UUSC's Human Rights Impact Assessment System. Brock and his wife, Julie, are members of the UUCS.

In light of the month’s theme, we will also examine why the perspective of blessings has particular resonance for each of us!

“Rites of Passage and Celebrating Blessings” Sermon by The Rev.

“The Body Beautiful”
Sermon by Rev. Doug Wadkins
Throughout our lives, our bodies, our relationship with our body and how we think and feel about them matter deeply. One way or another we each have our moments of wonder, goodness and challenge as we make our way. To be at home within our bodies may be some of the most important work we do in our life.

Savvy Women will have their meeting on Tuesday, May 17, at 3 in the Reeb Room. We meet every month on the 3rd Tuesday year-round. Purely social. Lots of laughs. This month's topic is why are we always so busy, and what do we do when we have nothing to do. How do we spend our time? Are we taking care of ourselves mentally when we over do? Anyway, it should be interesting. New members welcome.
Any questions, please email claireflannery@me.com or call 310-922-1743.

*SOCIAL JUSTICE Sharron Howard, Chair
The Unitarian Universalist Service Committee staff met in Sarasota for a strategic planning session at the end of March with several congregational advisory members from around the country. We learned about programs being proposed as well as from local partners in Florida. It was very informative to learn of environmental work being done between UU congregations led by UU Justice of Florida and a coalition of Southern Florida congregations led by the Ft Meyers congregation. Partners from the Miccosukee Tribe of Indians of Florida who live in the Everglades are trying to stop further development and encroachment by developers. The Tribes would love for visitors to come there to see the natural beauty of the Everglades and become advocates for the environment there. Perhaps when our Environmental Justice volunteers reconstitute themselves, this would be an area to explore. After all, we are a part of the interdependent web in South Florida. We have worked with the Immokolee Workers in the past who are located very near the homes of the Tribal members.
Additionally, the UUSC is instituting a new program to help immigrants settle easier in the US. UUSC would train UU volunteers to help asylum seekers process and fill out the morass of paperwork required by the government. Can you imagine how hard it would be for someone not familiar with our country or language or the bureaucracy to process all the paperwork needed to settle in our country?
If you are interested in any of these programs and would like more information, please contact Linda Bodycomb, the UUCS Liaison, at lbodycomb@gmail.com or call 410-610-9118.

Join us for Heart to Heart Abortion Conversations and Action for a post-Roe World with our partners National Network of Abortion Fund.
As the Supreme Court looks likely to overturn or critically undermine Roe v. Wade, it seems more and more likely that access to safe and legal abortions will be even further diminished everywhere. This 90-minute event will be a learning and practice space for supporters to engage with the Heart-to-Heart campaign materials in community and interact with NNAF and other participants in compassionate abortion conversations.

“Stories of Personal Reparations Efforts”
Hear the personal story of how an act of reparations transformed the lives of two strangers: a young Black woman and an older white woman. Through a transfer of wealth, a friendship blossomed, and the pair began to explore no-strings-attached giving. On the path of partnership, these two women built trust, discovered joy and witnessed healing through their Justice and Joy projects.
