Q: Why do we need a two-year interim?
A: We are not the church we were when Roger joined us in 2011. First, we have grown substantially which affects staff, volunteers, space (including our second location), technology support, etc. An Interim Minister will give us an experienced assessment of where we are today, where we are going and what we can do to continue to be successful. Second, the UUA reports that congregations that engage an Interim Minister for a 2-year period have a 90% success rate with their new Settled Minister. Congregations with a 1-year Interim report a 56% success rate. Third, a prospective Settled Minister knows that a congregation that has invested two years in interim ministry and self-assessment is better prepared for a new minister. That makes our church a more attractive place to work.

Q.   Given the pandemic and how it has interrupted life in general, are we interviewing candidates for the Interim Minister as planned?
A.  Yes, we are actively seeking an interim minister and will be interviewing candidates.  Interviews will take place using Zoom or Face Time.  The timetable we are aiming for is to have an interim minister selected by the end of May, with an anticipated start date of August 1. 2020.
Q:  Will the interim minister be eligible to apply for the settled minister position?
A:  Good question - thanks. The short answer is - no.  The UUA headquarters in Boston asks each interim search committee to sign an agreement indicating that they will not offer any interim minister a settled minister position at the conclusion of their assignment. And most interim ministers prefer this type of work as they are called "intentional" interim ministers. They believe this is their calling.

Q. Will Rev. Miller and Rev. Friend-Jones increase their hours before the Interim minister arrives?
A: Yes. After Roger retires, Beth Miller's hours will increase from half-time to three-quarter time. Budd Friend-Jones' hours will increase from quarter-time to half-time..

Q. Which minister will be in charge?
A: After Roger retires, Beth will serve as the minister in charge. Budd will continue as Associate Minister. When the Interim Minister starts, the Interim Minister will be the minister in charge. Beth and Budd will resume their original roles as Associate Ministers and report to the Interim Minister.
