“The Power of a Trauma Informed Community, Overcoming the Adverse Impact of Childhood Trauma”
Friday, May 3rd, 2019 at 10 a.m

Scientific understanding of trauma and resilience provides a new way to think about seemingly intractable social problems. Community members across the country are using the new science of trauma to build stronger, healthier and more just communities. This presentation will summarize what we know about the impact of trauma and adversity, give examples of how citizen engagement is making a difference, and describe the emerging "trauma-informed community initiative" in Sarasota.

Carrie Seidman is the lead columnist for the Sarasota Herald-Tribune, where she has been a staff writer since 2010. A graduate of the Columbia University School of Journalism, Seidman has been a reporter, critic and columnist for nearly 40 years, including with the New York Times, Los Angeles Herald-Examiner, and others. Her work on mental health, dance and the arts has won many awards from local, state and national organizations.  “The S Word,” a special project about the stigma of schizophrenia, won a national media award from Mental Health America.

Seidman is now involved in a grassroots effort to make Sarasota a trauma informed community, promoting resiliency and recovery from adverse childhood experiences by promoting connection, healing and transformation.
